Laila Gohar and Ignacio Mattos Mix Work and Play at Home in Manhattan
"Cooking is this act of nurturing that's very powerful. There's the smell, the rituals around it, setting the table, the mess, the sound of the dishes, all of it. It's very multisensory. The house is a bit of an incubator for certain things. Sometimes little accidents inspire something."
"I love living in a loft. It gets messy very quickly, but it has such great energy. On any given day or night, some mix of creative friends might, children often in tow, drop by the couple's Tribeca loft for a bowl of soup, a glass of champagne, or a taste of whatever else is on the menu."
Artist Laila Gohar and chef Ignacio Mattos share a Tribeca loft designed as a living laboratory for creative collaboration. The couple relocated downtown to be closer to their respective work—Gohar's art installations and Gohar World product line, and Mattos's restaurants Estela and Altro Paradiso. Their home operates with an open-door policy, welcoming creative friends and their children for meals and spontaneous gatherings. The loft's open kitchen and communal spaces facilitate direct service and interaction. Gohar emphasizes cooking's multisensory, nurturing qualities, while Mattos notes the space's energetic, messy nature inspires unexpected creative moments. Their son Paz, now two, moves freely through the home, contributing to the dynamic, freewheeling atmosphere reminiscent of Tribeca's artistic past.
