"I want to thank Jim Hiller for his dedication, professionalism, and the commitment he showed to our players and our team every day. He is a respected coach and person, and we appreciate the work he's done behind our bench. At this point in the season, we believe a change in leadership is necessary to give our group the best opportunity to reach its potential and compete at the level we expect."
"Hiller, 56, was promoted to head coach after the midseason firing of Todd McLellan in 2024. Smith, 48, was head coach of the Ottawa Senators for parts of five seasons (2019-2024) and joined the Kings after that as an assistant coach."
The Los Angeles Kings dismissed head coach Jim Hiller after two seasons, with associate head coach D.J. Smith assuming interim duties for the remainder of the season. The decision followed a disappointing February marked by a five-game losing streak and losses after the Olympic break. Despite acquiring star winger Artemi Panarin, the team struggled offensively. General manager Ken Holland stated the change was necessary to maximize the team's potential. Smith, 48, previously served as Ottawa Senators head coach and joined the Kings as an assistant. The Kings currently sit fifth in the Pacific Division, three points from a Wild Card spot, while attempting to capitalize on captain Anze Kopitar's final NHL season.
