Trainer D. Wayne Lukas, in declining health, won't return to horse racing
Briefly

D. Wayne Lukas, 89, a legendary figure in horse racing since 1968, is stepping away from the sport due to a severe MRSA blood infection that has caused extensive damage to his heart and digestive system. Despite being presented with an aggressive treatment plan involving surgeries, he has chosen to decline the treatment and will instead spend his remaining time at home with family, under hospice care. Lukas's notable career includes five Eclipse Awards and numerous wins, making him a celebrated figure in both the U.S. Racing and Quarter Horse Halls of Fame.
In a note to owners and friends, Lukas Enterprises announced, "We regret to inform you that D. Wayne Lukas will not be returning to racing."
Even with the best-case scenario, Wayne would require 24/7 assistance to manage daily activities.
Lukas is a member of both the U.S. Racing and Quarter Horse Halls of Fame, and has won the trainer Eclipse Award five times.
In his career, Lukas has run 30,436 races, winning 4,953, with his horses earning over $300 million.
