
On May 22, 1999, Mark McGwire hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium, becoming the third player to do so there. He started the game with a solo shot in the first inning off Darren Dreifort, giving the St. Louis Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. The Dodgers answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to win 10-7. McGwire finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and reached base a fourth time via a walk. He added a towering 483-foot home run in the eighth inning off Jamie Arnold that cleared the left-center field pavilion. After his playing career, he coached as a hitting coach for the Cardinals, Dodgers, and later served as a bench coach for the Padres.
