The first MLB game on artificial turf took place on March 21, 1966, between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros at the Astrodome. Initially named ChemGrass, the turf was rebranded to AstroTurf. The Astrodome, opened in 1965, had issues with sunlight blinding outfielders, leading to the installation of AstroTurf after the 1965 season. The entire field was covered by July 1966. The Dodgers participated in both the first and last regular-season games on AstroTurf. Currently, only a few MLB teams use turf fields, while others have transitioned to synthetic grass blends.
