The Los Angeles Dodgers are cautiously optimistic about Shohei Ohtani's return as a two-way player this season, with timelines still uncertain. Manager Dave Roberts mentioned Ohtani could begin pitching around May, but the team plans to maintain a five-man rotation initially. Due to an elbow surgery and a shoulder injury, Ohtani's throwing sessions have been limited, and while he is participating as a designated hitter, any pitching appearances, especially in Cactus League games, are ruled out for now. Ohtani's return is postponed until after the team's Tokyo Series.
As the game has intensified, his work playing in games, it was sort of trying to give him a little respite from the rehab and to slow him down.
We've never really put a time on anything. ... We just felt that to intensify the bullpens alongside the intensity of the games wasn't smart, so we just wanted to kind of slow-play it.
