One last roundup for Clayton Kershaw: He'll pitch in World Baseball Classic
""I know they're going to get one more next year," Kershaw told the crowd, "and I'm going to watch just like all of you.""
""It's just such a great group that it would have been really fun to be a part of," Kershaw said then. "It's almost like an All-Star Game with meaning. I was getting really excited about it.""
"At the height of his career, Kershaw would have been an easy choice to start the most important games for Team USA. But the Team USA roster features Cy Young winners Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal as well as top starters Logan Webb and Joe Ryan, so Kershaw appears more likely to make any appearances out of the bullpen."
Clayton Kershaw announced retirement plans but altered them by joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, which opens March 6 in Texas against Brazil. Kershaw had not previously participated in the Classic and had committed in 2023 but could not play then after failing to secure required insurance following a 2022 back injury. Kershaw's Hall of Fame résumé includes an MVP, three Cy Young awards, three World Series championships, 3,000 strikeouts and a no-hitter. Team USA's rotation includes Paul Skenes, Tarik Skubal, Logan Webb and Joe Ryan, suggesting Kershaw will likely be used from the bullpen.
