Kentucky Derby field at 19 with Grande scratch
Briefly

Grande has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to concerns over a slight cracked heel, according to owner Mike Repole. Despite clean diagnostics, including a PET scan, Repole expressed confusion over the decision to withdraw him just 36 hours prior to the race. He highlighted past experiences with other horses and stressed the importance of horse safety, while questioning the criteria used by veterinarians in making such decisions, particularly when diagnostics indicate the horse is sound.
"We were very confused with all the clean diagnostics and improvement all week, why they rushed to judgment to scratch today," Repole wrote.
"We all love these horses and our number one concern is the safety and welfare of these amazing Thoroughbreds. That is, and should always be the priority," Repole wrote.
