Dodgers 'unsung hero' Ben Rortvedt joins new National League team
""He really has that servant, leadership mentality behind the plate, which is really ingratiating himself with a lot of our pitchers," president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman added. "And obviously, the way they're throwing the ball has a lot to do with them, but at the same time, they feel so much comfort throwing to him as they're having that kind of success.""
"Dodgers manager Dave Roberts referred to Rortvedt as an "unsung hero" late in the year."
"Rortvedt batted .224/.309/.327 with two doubles, one home run and four RBI while appearing in 18 games for the Dodgers."
The Cincinnati Reds claimed Ben Rortvedt off waivers, ending his tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers after a trade-deadline acquisition. Rortvedt had been designated for assignment and cleared waivers while serving as the Dodgers' primary backup catcher late in the season. He hit .224/.309/.327 with two doubles, one home run and four RBI in 18 regular-season games and started four postseason games before not appearing after Game 2 of the NLDS once Will Smith returned. Rortvedt earned praise for helping pitchers stick to game plans. The DFA resulted from no minor-league options, an unlikely three-catcher roster, and a 40-man roster crunch.
