"He's been able to accomplish those things. We get Trackman reports. We know how many pitches he's thrown, we know the velocity, and we have a general idea of the movements. We get some cellphone videos and stuff from Will Ireton (who is working with Team Japan during the tournament) and Possum (Yosuke Nakajima, a Dodgers trainer), who was in Tokyo as well."
"I haven't talked to him. We had a meeting before he left just to try and lay out some general parameters if he could do these things. We've been able to track what's going on and talk with Will to see how he's responding. That's kind of how we're staying in touch."
Shohei Ohtani is returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers following Japan's elimination from the World Baseball Classic. Despite honoring his commitment not to pitch during the tournament, Ohtani engaged in pitching work remotely under a plan established by the Dodgers coaching staff before his departure. The team monitored his progress through Trackman reports, velocity data, movement analysis, and video updates from staff members working with Team Japan. Pitching coach Mark Prior confirmed Ohtani successfully completed the assigned development tasks. His early exit from the WBC provides additional preparation time before the regular season begins, allowing him to transition back to full spring training activities and potentially be ready for opening day.
