The Los Angeles Dodgers are grappling with a mounting injury crisis, particularly among their pitching staff, which currently has 14 players on the injured list. Roki Sasaki, a promising young pitcher with a 2.10 ERA in Japan, has not lived up to expectations in MLB, posting a 4.72 ERA. His struggles, coupled with a recent shoulder impingement, have raised concerns about his performance and potential for development. Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior emphasizes the difficulty of transitioning to MLB while managing injuries, suggesting that Sasaki's shoulder condition has impacted his pitching and velocity.
"Clearly, he was bothered by it last year at times in Japan, and it's kinda reared its head again a little bit," Prior said. "I think you kinda have two different paths going on here. You have a development path overlayed with him trying to perform at the Major League level, and those things aren't easy."
"Clearly the velocity continued to trend down. And finally he got to the point where he spoke up and we're glad he did, because I think it's something we needed to address, his overall shoulder conditioning and strength."
