"I thought it was a tough one for me," Roberts said. "Hadn't been in the ninth inning, eight ups, potentially going on regular his next outing. I thought it was 50/50."
"Roki has been throwing the baseball really well. Have a two-run lead. I felt good with Roki there."
"I felt I could have," Snell said. "But I trust Dave. He knows what's best for the team."
Blake Snell struck out 10 through eight innings, walked no batters and allowed only one single, facing the minimum number of batters through eight frames — the first pitcher to do so in a postseason game since 1956. Snell was at 103 pitches when manager Dave Roberts chose to summon rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki to protect a two-run lead. Sasaki returned from a shoulder impingement as a reliever and had dominated in brief regular-season and October appearances with multiple strikeouts and no walks. Roberts described the choice as a tough, 50/50 decision, and Snell said he trusted the manager.
