Roki Sasaki, a 23-year-old right-hander from Japan, posted a 2.10 ERA across four NPB seasons before joining MLB. He began the MLB season with a 4.72 ERA through eight starts, showing command issues and a drop in fastball velocity. Sasaki has been on the injured list with a shoulder impingement since mid-May. In his fifth Triple-A rehab start he recorded eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings, four walks, three runs allowed, 16 whiffs, and averaged a 98.6 mph fastball while topping 100 mph six times. Manager Dave Roberts said the club will gain more clarity after the next outing and that Sasaki could possibly pitch out of the bullpen temporarily as the team regains pitching depth.
