Commentary: From the Big Apple, sour grapes toward the voice of the Dodgers
Joe Davis is the lead voice for the Dodgers on SportsNet LA and the lead voice for national baseball broadcasts on Fox. He called a Yankees–Mets game in which Mets outfielder Carson Benge dropped an easy fly ball, prompting Davis to say, “Oh, no! Oh, no, the Mets!” The remark fit Mets fans’ embrace of “LOLMets,” a term for the team’s unusual failures. Davis also described how the Mets often look ready to contend but something goes wrong, including injuries to key players and bad breaks during winning stretches. Sports talk hosts made “daft shots” at Davis but were criticized for sounding soft.
""This year, and in recent years, there have been so many moments where it looks like the Mets are right there, ready to make a run or win the division or win a championship, and then something just tends to go wrong," Davis said in San Diego Tuesday. "They were in a stretch right there where every single day, they were getting a stud hurt. They put together a winning streak against the Tigers, then Clay Holmes has the comebacker break his ankle.""
