USC's Watkins named AP women's player of year
Briefly

JuJu Watkins, a sophomore at USC, was named The Associated Press women's college basketball Player of the Year after a standout season leading the Trojans to their first Big Ten title in 31 years. With 29 votes from a national media panel, Watkins showcased her talent despite a competitive year. She ranks sixth on USC's all-time scoring list and had impressive statistics prior to her season-ending ACL injury. Her coach, Lindsay Gottlieb, praised her ability to perform in crucial moments and elevate her team's performance.
"I think what's so significant about this award is that this was a year that didn't have an absence of talent and stars, and JuJu found a way to elevate herself and her team," USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said.
"She makes a lot of things that aren't easy look easy. It's one thing to say she's a generational talent, but another to actually do it and put yourself up with names like Stewie, Maya and Courtney Paris."
"She performed her best at the biggest moments. I thought she really throughout the course of the year learned how to dominate and empower the others."
