"was to circumvent the salary cap."
"Neither Mr. Ballmer nor the Clippers circumvented the salary cap or engaged in any misconduct related to Aspiration. Any contrary assertion is provably false."
Allegations claim the LA Clippers circumvented the NBA salary cap by paying Kawhi Leonard $28 million through a now-bankrupt company owned by team owner Steve Ballmer. Legal documents purportedly involving the tree-planting service Aspiration indicate Ballmer paid Leonard without requiring any marketing or endorsements. An unnamed Aspiration employee said the payment "was to circumvent the salary cap." The Clippers issued a statement denying any circumvention or misconduct related to Aspiration and calling contrary assertions provably false. Kawhi Leonard is under a three-year, $153 million contract with the Clippers through the 2026-27 season.
