Mega Millions tickets just got more expensive-but winning the jackpot is easier to win
Briefly

The Mega Millions lottery is undergoing significant changes for the second time in over 20 years, with ticket prices rising from $2 to $5. This increase aims to provide better overall odds, larger jackpots, and faster-growing payouts. Players will enjoy improved odds of winning any prize, now at 1 in 23. A multiplier feature will enhance non-jackpot payouts. This evolution responds to player feedback for bigger prizes beyond the jackpot. The new version rolled out Saturday, with the first drawing scheduled for the next day.
As of this Saturday, ticket prices for the Mega Millions have gone from $2 to $5 apiece. According to a press release, the price hike will lead to "better odds overall, larger starting jackpots, and faster-growing jackpots."
The updated game parameters increase players' odds of winning any prize from 1 in 24 to 1 in 23. A new built-in multiplier feature will automatically increase every non-jackpot win by up to 10X its base price.
