The battle for the Giro d'Italia intensifies as Isaac del Toro and Richard Carapaz forge a lead during stage 19, leaving Simon Yates behind. Del Toro, the current leader, narrowly beat Carapaz in a critical sprint, securing vital seconds. Both cyclists faced significant challenges, completing a 166km stage with a staggering 4,950 meters of climbing. As they prepare for stage 20, Del Toro's focus will be on securing his lead, while Carapaz aims to mount a final challenge to claim the pink jersey.
At the finish line, Del Toro picked up what may be a vital two seconds, nipping ahead of his Ecuadorian rival in the sprint.
"I think we were all very tired, and in the end I just had to give it a try, but I think it was a good stage," Carapaz said.
"Of course, in the last climb, he tried harder and with all the speed he could because it wasn't so steep. I had the legs to be with him."
The Mexican now faces a stage 20 battle to retain the pink jersey into Sunday's final stage in Rome.
