Penske Media (PMC), owner of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, Vibe, and Artforum, sued Google and Alphabet claiming illegal use of publishers' content to create AI summaries that harm publisher revenue. The complaint alleges Google leverages its monopoly to coerce publishers into allowing republishing of content in AI Overviews and to use that content for training and grounding AI models. Google defends AI Overviews as making search more helpful and creating discovery opportunities, and says they send traffic to a broader set of sites. The suit contends Google tied indexing to additional uses that publishers did not consent to.
