Defense Department says Anthropic poses 'unacceptable risk' to national security

The Pentagon responded by arguing that granting Anthropic access to defense infrastructure would introduce unacceptable risks because AI systems are vulnerable to manipulation. The department expressed concerns that Anthropic could disable or alter its technology during military operations if the company believes its corporate policies are being violated. Secretary Pete Hegseth incorporated a provision requiring AI contractors to allow unrestricted use for any lawful purpose. Anthropic rejected these terms, prompting the Pentagon to question whether the company could be a trusted partner for sensitive initiatives. President Trump subsequently ordered federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology.
