World's largest sports piracy site shut down by police
""resounding victory in its fight to detect, deter, and dismantle criminal perpetrators of digital piracy""
""With this landmark action, we have put more points on the board for sports leagues, entertainment companies, and fans worldwide,""
The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment coordinated with Egyptian police to shut down Streameast, the world's largest illegal live sports streaming site, which attracted more than 1.6 billion visits in the past year. Streameast provided pirated streams of Premier League football, Formula One races, and Major League Baseball, with primary traffic from the UK, US, Canada, the Philippines, and Germany. Two men were arrested in El-Sheikh Zaid and authorities seized laptops, smartphones, cash, and credit cards. Investigators uncovered links to a UAE shell company alleged to have laundered $4.9m of advertising revenue and $150,000 in cryptocurrency. A recent report found illegal sports streaming operating at industrial scale, while global sports media rights exceeded $60bn last year, contributing to enforcement urgency.
