On January 13, 2026 Microsoft released a security update that can cause credential prompt failures during Remote Desktop connections using the Windows App on Windows client devices, impacting Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365. The bug affects supported Windows client versions from Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016 through Windows 11 25H2, plus Windows Server 2019–2025. Microsoft recommends uninstalling the update or using the Remote Desktop Client or the Windows App web client as workarounds. Uninstalling removes security fixes. Microsoft is investigating with Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows Update teams and plans an out-of-band update in the coming days. Users report authentication errors and frustration after migrating to the Windows App.
