"Tymoshchuk is a serial ransomware criminal who targeted blue-chip American companies, healthcare institutions, and large foreign industrial firms, and threatened to leak their sensitive data online if they refused to pay,"
"In some instances, these attacks resulted in the complete disruption of business operations until encrypted data could be recovered or restored,"
"This prosecution and today's rewards announcement reflects our determination to protect businesses from digital sabotage and extortion and to relentlessly pursue the criminals responsible, no matter where they are located."
Volodymyr Tymoshchuk, 28, faces federal charges for allegedly masterminding LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim ransomware campaigns from December 2018 to October 2021. Federal authorities allege the operations impacted more than 250 U.S. companies and hundreds more worldwide, producing estimated total damages near $18 billion. The campaigns targeted blue-chip firms, healthcare institutions, and large industrial companies and included threats to publish stolen data if victims did not pay. The 2019 Norsk Hydro attack locked tens of thousands of PCs across 170 sites in 40 countries, disrupted all operations, affected most of 35,000 staff, and caused roughly $81 million in downtime and cleanup costs. Tymoshchuk remains at large and an $11 million reward is offered for information leading to his capture or extradition.
