Miljödata, an IT supplier of HR systems to around 80% of Swedish municipal governments, discovered a ransomware breach on 23 August. Approximately 200 municipalities and regional governments experienced severe disruption to services. Regions including Halland and Gotland warned that personal data may have been affected, with Halland reporting Adato, Stella and Novi systems down and Gotland using four Miljödata systems for medical certificates, rehabilitation plans and occupational injuries. The national cybersecurity centre is coordinating disclosure, CERT-SE has offered advice and support, and a police investigation is underway. Miljödata reportedly received a 1.5 bitcoin ransom demand.
"The government is receiving ongoing information about the incident and is in close contact with the relevant authorities," Swedish minister for civil defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin.
"CERT-SE, which has the task of supporting Swedish society in handling and preventing IT security incidents, has offered advice and support to both the company in question and the affected customers."
"Region Gotland is one of many regions and municipalities that are affected by the cyber attacks that Miljödata is exposed to," the region's HR Director Lotta Israelsson,
"At present, there are extensive investigations at Miljödata to investigate the extent of the attack and we are in continuous contact with the supplier."
