""I started to create videos about cryptocurrency and launch my own exchange on cryptocurrency," the Durham, North Carolina, resident said."
""The gentleman sent me a link to download this software and I clicked on it and it then opened I have a mac and then opened in my terminal and asked me for my password," Nicholson adds."
""The hairs on my neck started to raise. I opened up the script and I saw that there was a lot of funky characters in there.""
""I've been signed out of all my accounts, and my money was drained.""
Nicholson produced cryptocurrency videos and planned to launch an exchange. A contact arrived via social media direct message and engaged him over several days with detailed questions. The contact arranged a meeting and, minutes before, sent a link claiming technical problems. Nicholson downloaded software that opened Terminal on his Mac and requested his password; he noticed a suspicious script with strange characters. He disconnected Wi-Fi and devices, but later found he had been signed out of accounts and $80,000 in cryptocurrency was drained. He describes the incident as a targeted scam and advises slowing down when responding to messages.
