Asif William Rahman, a former CIA analyst, has received a 37-month prison sentence for unlawfully retaining and transmitting top secret national defense information. Rahman, who had been with the CIA since 2016, was found guilty of retaining classified documents and sharing them with unauthorized individuals. The information included sensitive details about Israel's potential actions against Iran. To avoid detection, Rahman attempted to erase his digital footprint through a extensive deletion campaign of his work product. He was arrested while in Cambodia and has since pleaded guilty to charges of willful retention of classified information.
"The defendant photographed the documents and transferred those images to a computer program that allowed him to edit the images to attempt to conceal their source and delete his activity."
"Rahman retained multiple Secret and Top Secret documents without authorization on October 17, 2024, took them to his place of residence in a backpack..."
