"Coming in with Abagnale, the Lesher series is helping a local nonprofit by raising awareness and connecting them with the community. The group associated with Abagnale's event is Contra Costa Senior Legal Services, which offers free legal help to Contra Costa County residents age 60 and older, focusing on housing issues, financial security and protecting seniors from physical, emotional and financial abuse."
"Born April 27, 1948, in Bronxville, New York (although some sources say the Bronx), Abagnale turned to a life of crime at age 15. Though he started with petty crimes, he later impersonated an airline pilot, cashed fraudulent checks while on the run and spent time in prison. These events led Abagnale to write Catch Me If You Can, a partly fictionalized autobiography published in 1980."
Frank Abagnale is a former con artist who later became a respected authority on fraud detection and cybersecurity for the FBI. He will speak Sept. 30 at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek as part of the Lesher Foundation's Newsmakers series. The 20th Newsmakers season brought back favorite past speakers, and Abagnale previously appeared in the inaugural Lesher Speaker Series a decade earlier. The event will raise awareness and connect the community with Contra Costa Senior Legal Services, which provides free legal help to residents aged 60 and older on housing, financial security and elder-abuse protections. Abagnale's early crimes, impersonations and prison time inspired his 1980 partly fictionalized autobiography Catch Me If You Can, which later inspired the 2002 film.
