The suspects specialized in technical hacking and functioned as hash crackers who extracted passwords using specialized software. Stolen credentials enabled group members to breach corporate networks, deploy ransomware, and extort payments in cryptocurrency. Searches of residences in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv yielded digital storage devices and cryptocurrency assets. Black Basta emerged in April 2022, targeted more than 500 companies across North America, Europe, and Australia, and reportedly earned hundreds of millions of dollars from illicit crypto payments.
