Airport cyberattacks: What you need to know DW 09/22/2025
"People will accept delays, but they want to be kept informed. One of the things that frustrates people is sitting in an airport not knowing what on earth is going on. Is this going to affect flights in two, three, four days?"
"can be mitigated with manual check-in operations"
"If it was a ransomware attack, why were only three airports affected?"
A third-party ransomware attack on Friday targeted MUSE, a widely-used check-in and boarding software operated by Collins Aerospace, disrupting several European airports including Berlin, Brussels and London Heathrow. Brussels canceled about half its flights on Sunday, and Berlin and London experienced cancellations and delays with effects lingering into Monday. Manual check-in and baggage-tagging mitigated some impacts but created knock-on delays as staff performed tasks normally automated. The incident exposes the heavy reliance of major infrastructure on IT systems that can be compromised, with services deployed at over 150 airports worldwide and concern that more sites could be affected.
