$16 billion: The amount of internet crime losses in 2024
Briefly

The FBI's 2024 Internet Crime Report indicates a staggering 859,532 reported complaints of internet crimes, resulting in losses surpassing $16 billion, a significant 33% rise compared to the previous year. California, Texas, and Florida led in complaints, with seniors over 60 accounting for the most significant losses at $5 billion. Investment fraud, especially in cryptocurrency, dominated the losses with over $6.5 billion reported. Director Kash Patel emphasized the importance of reporting incidents to empower law enforcement in combating these crimes, highlighting the need for public participation to aid the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which marks its 25th anniversary.
Reporting is one of the first and most important steps in fighting crime so law enforcement can use this information to combat a variety of frauds and scams.
The IC3, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is only as successful as the reports it receives; that's why it's imperative that the public immediately report suspected cyber-enabled criminal activity to the FBI.
