The Minecraft Movie debuted with $15 million in China, but its success might be fleeting due to new 145% tariffs imposed by President Trump on Chinese goods. In retaliation, China plans to limit the number of US films allowed in theaters, which could diminish American cinema's cultural influence in the country. The market for US films has already declined significantly from $3 billion annually between 2017-2019 to just $1.2 billion last year, as Chinese audiences increasingly favor domestic films like Ne Zha 2. Experts predict that the new restrictions will further diminish the popularity of US movies in China.
"The US government's move to 'abuse tariffs on China' will inevitably further reduce the domestic audience's favorability towards American films," a spokesperson stated on Thursday.
"US movies are less popular anyway in China now, but I feel that [the new restrictions] will make them less so," said cinema analyst David Hancock.
"American films made about $3 billion annually in China between 2017 and 2019, but by last year that number was down to $1.2 billion," according to Omdia cinema analyst David Hancock.
"Rather than impacting the markets that Trump watches so closely, a drop in the number of US movies playing on Chinese screens will deeply impact the cultural cachet American cinema has in the country."
