Tom Cruise has faced several underwater scenes in his career, notably in "Legend," "Edge of Tomorrow," and "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation." Christopher McQuarrie, who has collaborated with Cruise on eleven films, expressed dissatisfaction with the underwater sequence in "Rogue Nation," citing challenges like time constraints and over-reliance on visual effects. Determined to improve, both filmmakers plan to prioritize practical effects and learn from past mistakes in their upcoming project, "The Final Reckoning," which features a significant underwater plot involving a secret submarine.
"Shooting in water is extremely challenging and very frustrating," said McQuarrie, who at one point swore never to do another underwater scene.
"We're always wanting to take the lessons we had learned and do something that was more practical," said McQuarrie. "Less virtual, rely less on CGI, less on green screen..."
