"I didn't want my kids in 10 or 15 years to look at my work and say, Oh, Papa was so cynical.' I wanted them to feel as if I tried to build something, to bring light, to bring hope."
"The world already looked bleak, he tells me. It felt like we were living in a really bad science fiction movie, and that it was going to get worse. Then Covid happened. I felt the world going really hard. So I thought: OK, now I need softness; now I need tenderness."
Ugo Bienvenu, a French animator, spent eight months campaigning for Arco, his animated feature nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars. The film combines the emotional depth of ET with the artistic style of Studio Ghibli, creating a family-friendly animation with a hopeful vision of the future. Despite being naturally pessimistic, Bienvenu intentionally crafted the film to be optimistic and kind, wanting his children to see his work as an attempt to bring light and hope rather than cynicism. He began writing the script in 2019 with co-writer Felix de Givry during an already bleak period, and the arrival of Covid reinforced his desire to create something soft and tender. For the first time, his family accompanied him to Los Angeles for the campaign.
