The SXSW Film & TV Festival recently announced its award winners for 2025, highlighting significant achievements in independent cinema. Amy Wang’s film 'Slanted' won the top prize for its bold and innovative exploration of racial identity, underscored by powerful performances. Alongside this, 'Fucktoys' by Annapurna Sriram received the Special Jury Award for a Multi-Hyphenate. Amanda Peet earned the Performance award for 'Fantasy Life', and the Documentary prize went to 'Shuffle' by Benjamin Flaherty. Additionally, Grace Glowicki's 'Dead Lover' was recognized with a special award for its distribution success post-festival.
"This unflinching satirical thriller examines racial identity in a bold and skin-tingling new way. Featuring simmering performances by the cast, this film is both specific to the fractured identity of Asian Americans and universally relatable in its theme of desperately needing to belong. The director's vulnerability in mining her personal experience combined with her delicate and daring filmmaking create a haunting piece that lingers long after the credits roll."
"Annapurna Sriram is a visionary force, a rare artist whose work is as daring as it is insightful, pushing boundaries with 'Fucktoys' and illuminating the complexities of human relationships in contemporary space."
