Filmmaker from Bay Area sued over $17 million Sundance film
Briefly

Dave Franco and Alison Brie are facing a lawsuit that claims their recently premiered film at Sundance, 'Together,' infringes on the 2023 film 'Better Half.' The lawsuit alleges that both films feature strikingly similar plots involving a couple with bodies that begin to stick together, as well as identical references to a Spice Girls vinyl record. The plaintiff, StudioFest, asserts that they pitched 'Better Half' to the actors' agents in 2020, which adds to the claims of infringement. They argue that the similarities are so marked that coincidence cannot be a plausible explanation.
'Together' is a blatant rip-off of 'Better Half,' copying the latter's plot, themes, characters, dialogue, mood, setting, pace, and sequence of events.
The totality of similarities between the two projects belies any claim of coincidence or independent creation.
As the audience laughed and cheered, Jacklin and Beale sat in stunned silence, their worst nightmare unspooling before them.
The couple's new film, 'Together,' copies 'Better Half,' a film released in 2023 according to the lawsuit.
