The film 'Death of a Unicorn' presents a unique twist on the unicorn mythos by depicting two predatory unicorns terrorizing wealthy individuals. Unlike typical representations, it maintains an emotional core, emphasizing the connection between unicorns and their lore. Writer-director Alex Scharfman was adamant about avoiding a cynical take, focusing instead on genuine emotional connections, particularly between the protagonists Elliot and Ridley as they navigate their encounter with the unicorns. This layered approach distinguishes it in a crowded genre of subversion.
It was really important to me that we didn't do a cynical movie. That is, a monster movie where the monster happens to be a unicorn.
The emotional throughline comes from Elliot and Ridley's relationship and the connection Ridley forms with the monstrous equines.
