Clown in a Cornfield review perky yet run-of-the-mill slasher fare
Briefly

Clown in a Cornfield, a summer slasher film, has gained buzz since its SXSW premiere, yet it feels modest for a wide release. Acquired by horror streamer Shudder, it serves better suited for small screen viewing. Following the success of Terrifier 3, the film was rolled out broadly but lacks the inventive gore or genuine sense of danger expected in the genre. Based on Adam Cesare's YA novel, it recounts the story of Quinn navigating a classic slasher setup with familiar tropes, all while feeling stale and unoriginal.
One would be forgiven for assuming there was a lot more to early summer slasher Clown in a Cornfield other than, well, a clown in a cornfield.
The film, which was picked up by ever-growing horror streamer Shudder at the end of last year, would have been a wiser choice for a small screen premiere.
There's nothing here to warrant such concern, no real sense of danger to be conjured, Clown in a Cornfield content to be a perfectly watchable, if mostly mechanical, production line slasher.
It's like we're in some awful 80s slasher horror movie! one of the anonymous sub-Scream characters says at one point.
