"Ruth's contribution to the monumental task of breaking the Enigma cypher was truly historic. Ruth was a remarkable woman with immense charm and charisma, and she will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her."
Ruth Bourne was a Jewish veteran from High Barnet who joined the Women's Royal Naval Service at 18 and was selected to work at Bletchley Park as a Bombe operator and checker decoding intercepted German messages. The Bombe was an electromechanical device built by Alan Turing to crack the Enigma cypher by rapidly testing daily settings, enabling decrypted intelligence that altered wartime operations and saved millions. Bourne remained sworn to secrecy and knew only her specific tasks. She received France's Legion d'honneur in 2018 for her service. The work at Bletchley Park accelerated industrialised codebreaking and the development of early computers.
