Cable Street is a musical about the 4 October 1936 confrontation between Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists and local residents in a largely Jewish area of east London. Mosley founded the BUF in 1932, taking inspiration and funding from the Nazi and Italian fascist movements and organizing Blackshirts who planned a march and speech at Shoreditch Town Hall. Thousands of Jewish, Irish and other immigrant residents turned out to block the march, resulting in the Battle of Cable Street with around 175 injured and about 150 arrests. Director Adam Lenson highlights the story's intergenerational importance and hopes schools and young people engage with the history. Set designer Yoav Segal has a personal connection: his grandfather participated in the battle as a 19-year-old.
