"On Thursday, Mississippi Today reported that several officials, who requested anonymity out of fear of retribution, said NPS told them to remove visitor brochures from the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument and edit out details about Beckwith. Among the details reportedly flagged for removal: that Evers was found lying in a pool of blood after he was shot. The brochures referred to Beckwith as "a member of the racist and segregationist White Citizens' Council.""
"Evers was 37 years old when he was murdered on June 12, 1963-just hours after Beckwith watched President John F. Kennedy deliver a televised Oval Office address on civil rights. Beckwith had been hiding in the bushes outside Evers' home in Jackson, Mississippi, and shot him in the back after he stepped out of his car. The bullet hole is still visible if you visit the property today."
Medgar Evers was the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi and a decorated World War II veteran who investigated Emmett Till’s murder. National Park Service staff reportedly instructed removal of visitor brochures at the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument and editing of material about Byron De La Beckwith, including language describing him as a member of the racist and segregationist White Citizens' Council and that Evers was found lying in a pool of blood. The brochures were returned hours later with officials saying they were outdated. Evers was killed on June 12, 1963; Beckwith was convicted in 1994 and died in 2011.
