Translating a Medieval Giant: Global Project to Bring Alfonso X's General estoria to New Audiences - Medievalists.net
Briefly

The General estoria, commissioned by Alfonso X of Castile, is recognized as a monumental historical text detailing the world’s history from Biblical creation to Alfonso’s time. Authored by a diverse group of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish scholars in Castilian, it is notable for its unprecedented length and scope. An international team, led by Dr. Francisco Peña and including 55 scholars, aims to translate and digitize the text, addressing its complexity and accessibility issues. The project will use the digital platform Colabora, enhancing the preservation and recognition of this crucial literary work in history.
The General estoria, commissioned by Alfonso X of Castile, is a monumental attempt to record the entire history of the world—from Biblical creation to Alfonso's own time.
While this is one of the world’s most unique and important texts, it is unfortunately not widely known, as many relevant texts written in medieval Spain have disappeared.
The scale and complexity of the General estoria has long made it inaccessible to scholars and general readers alike, necessitating a global collaborative effort.
We hope to change that and preserve this valuable piece of literature forever, making it accessible to scholars and general audiences through translation.
