On August 24, 1992 Hurricane Andrew smashed into Florida, causing 65 deaths and more than $26 billion in damage across Florida, Louisiana and the Bahamas. In 1814 British forces invaded Washington, D.C., setting fire to the Capitol, the White House and other public buildings. In 1912 Congress created the Alaska Territory. In 1932 Amelia Earhart flew nonstop from Los Angeles to Newark, becoming the first woman to complete a solo coast-to-coast flight. In 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty came into force, and in 2006 Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet.
