Tickets Alert: Banqueting House is reopening to the public
"At the time of its construction in 1622, it stood out brightly amongst the Tudor brick and wood with its bright white stone facade and design by the architect Inigo Jones, who introduced the principles of classical architecture to Britain with this building. Inside the highlight is the painted ceiling by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, commissioned by King Charles I and installed in 1636."
"The building closed in May 2024 for restoration, to replace the 1960s floor with something more in line with the building's heritage, and to modernise the old facilities, such as the heating and electrics, which were inefficient and lacked capacity for modern use. They're also installing a lift to replace the rather undignified stair climber, so there will be proper step-free access to the main floor for the first time."
Whitehall's Banqueting House is among the few surviving parts of the Palace of Whitehall and will open for limited public days after over a year of restoration. The building, constructed in 1622 to a design by Inigo Jones, introduced classical architectural principles to Britain and houses a painted ceiling by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, commissioned by King Charles I and installed in 1636. Work that began in May 2024 replaces a 1960s floor, modernises heating and electrics, and installs a lift to provide proper step-free access. The 1973 throne canopy and dais will be removed. Full reopening is scheduled for summer 2026, with open days on 27-29 November; tickets release at noon on 10 November.
