Port Royal, once called the 'Wickedest City on Earth,' has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This reflects its rich historical and cultural legacy. Located at the tip of a sandbar near Kingston, it became a strategically important port after British colonization in the 17th century. Known for becoming a haven for pirates, Port Royal suffered a devastating earthquake in 1692, sinking much of the city. Despite never regaining its former status, the recent UNESCO recognition emphasizes its importance to Jamaica and global history.
"Port Royal's recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is significant, validating the relevance of its history to Jamaica and the world," said Michelle and Suzanne Rousseau.
"Port Royal is a part of Kingston life, and like most Jamaicans, we love it for its beauty and history and for all that lies beneath the surface of its blue waters that was lost."
