Taiping Elementary School occupies a hill above Keelung’s west harbor and originally served the children of dockworkers on the west wharf. The school experienced growth and prominence during the 1960s. Over subsequent decades, local industry transformed, reducing dock labor and prompting population outflow. A declining birthrate further reduced student numbers and undermined long-term viability. Enrollment fell until the school could no longer be sustained. The school closed in 2017, reflecting wider economic and demographic shifts affecting the port community and its institutions.
