Hasan Hasanovic survived a harrowing six-day journey through the Srebrenica forest in July 1995, evading soldiers and witnessing extreme violence. He lost sight of his family and faced constant threat from artillery and gunfire. Exhausted and nearly succumbing to sleep, he received a crucial warning from another man. After this grueling escape, he reached safety with others. Unforgotten is the tragedy of the fall of Srebrenica, where 8,372 people were killed, marking a significant atrocity in the Bosnian War.
It took him six days to make it through the forest, running for his life amid the chaos caused by an artillery attack and losing sight of his family.
He saw soldiers shooting at fleeing people as if they were hunting animals, and he crawled through hails of bullets and dodged hand grenades.
Once, exhausted and on the cusp of sleep, he was nudged by a man who said, 'If you fall asleep now, it'll be forever.'
On July 11, 1995, the troops of the Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic captured the enclave and UN Safe Area of Srebrenica.
