SlaveVoyages, a comprehensive resource detailing the trans-Atlantic slave trade, will be permanently housed at Harvard, as announced by Henry Louis Gates Jr. The project consists of a vast dataset covering over 30,000 slaving vessels and 221,000 individuals connected to the trade. Initially launched in 2008 at Emory University, it features advanced visualizations, including animated maps and 3D recreations of historical ships. Support from leading institutions, including the Hutchins Center and the Legacy of Slavery Initiative, ensures its continued growth and accessibility for educational purposes.
"I'm pleased to tell you today that the SlaveVoyages site, with all of its databases, will live in perpetuity here at Harvard University," Gates announced at a conference."
"The project's website, launched in 2008 at Emory University, brings data to life with rich visualizations. A time-lapse animation tracks each of the individual voyages on a map of the trans-Atlantic slave trade."
