Skeleton of Three Musketeers hero d'Artagnan may have been found
"The skeleton was discovered under the altar in consecrated ground, with a French coin from that time in the grave. The bullet that killed him was lying at chest level, exactly as described in the history books."
"Wim Dijkman, a retired archeologist from Maastricht, was called to the Church of St Peter and St Paul after the deacon reported the discovery of a skeleton. Dijkman has spent 28 years searching for the musketeer's final resting place."
Workers repairing a church in Maastricht found a skeleton that may belong to Charles de Batz-Castelmore, known as d'Artagnan. He was a musketeer for King Louis XIV and died in 1673 during the siege of Maastricht. The skeleton was discovered under the altar, with a French coin and a bullet found at chest level, supporting the identification. Wim Dijkman, an archeologist, has dedicated years to finding d'Artagnan's burial site. The skeleton is now housed in an archaeological institute in Deventer.
