"The voyage of the crew in a 22.5-foot ship's boat through the 'Furious Fifties' is regarded by many historians as the greatest small-boat journey ever completed."
"Shackleton and five companions set out in the James Caird, launching into the freezing wilderness of the Southern Ocean, targeting South Georgia across dangerous seas."
The James Caird, a 22.5-foot lifeboat, was central to Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition in 1916. After the Endurance was trapped by ice, Shackleton and five crew members embarked on a perilous journey across the Southern Ocean to reach South Georgia, 1,300 kilometers away. Battling severe storms and freezing conditions for over two weeks, they successfully reached their destination, enabling the rescue of stranded crew members on Elephant Island. The boat is now displayed at Dulwich College, where it is part of the Shackleton collection.
