"The seal of Edward the Confessor is the only authentic royal seal from before the Norman Conquest, with only three genuine impressions known to survive."
"Despite its age and travel history, the Saint-Denis impression is by far the best preserved of the three, originally attached to a writ of 1053-1057."
"The loss of such a special item, of pivotal interest to both English and French history, caused much dismay in the scholarly community at the time."
"It turns out it wasn't stolen or destroyed, but simply misplaced, rediscovered in 2021 in the Sceaux detaches section of Archives."
The rediscovered seal impression of Edward the Confessor, dating between 1052 and 1066, is the only authentic royal seal from before the Norman Conquest. Only three genuine impressions of this seal are known to exist. The best-preserved impression was kept in the monastery of Saint-Denis and later moved to the French National Archives. After being lost for over 40 years, it was found in 2021, causing relief in the scholarly community due to its significance in English and French history.
